About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This is an extremely common condition that causes painful episodic numbness, tingling and burning in the hands. Most often, those affected have symptoms at night or in the morning. It can affect anyone, but tends to be more prevalent as we age. It is a known result of significant trauma, such as falls onto the hand, wrist fracture or motor vehicle accidents. It also can be related to chronic trauma from heavy machinery or vibrating tools, as seen in factory work, truck or bus driving, construction, etc. Those with diabetes and thyroid disease have a higher incidence of this problem.
There are many described treatments for this problem. Unfortunately many of these remedies have little or no evidence of efficacy, or have been shown to be ineffective, although they continue to be used. There are several useful and proven modalities in treatment, including night splinting, injection therapy, activity modification, and surgical release of the carpal tunnel. Dr. Ugras also has experience with ultrasound-guided hydrodissection and ultrasound-guided or endoscopic carpal tunnel release. These cutting-edge options will often cut down on recovery time and lessen the need for pain medications.
If you are concerned regarding this problem, we can perform a detailed examination, order x-rays and other tests as needed and discuss the options with you to find the option that best suits your needs. Contact us today.
