About Polydactyly
Polydactyly is when a hand or foot has an extra finger or toe. It is also known as hyperdactyly. The extra digit often does not have joints, thought it may contain bone. Normally smaller than an ordinary finger or toe, the extra digit may often be removed, being primarily composed of soft tissue. Most commonly, the extra digit is located on the side of the pinky finger.
While this condition often does not interfere with hand function, the extra digit may be removed operatively. Removal may seem trivial, but often requires extensive planning to prevent injury to critical structures, minimize scarring and lessen the need for additional procedures as the patient grows. A skilled hand surgeon is often required for optimal function and appearance.
